The State Opera in Prague is breaking new ground in energy management for historic buildings. In collaboration with FLOWBOX, the implementation of the advanced FLOWBOX EMOS energy management system was successfully completed in March 2025. This innovative project not only introduces smarter energy control but also improves operational efficiency and uncovers opportunities for savings.
Innovation in a Historic Setting
The State Opera, one of the Czech Republic’s most prestigious cultural institutions, is housed in a historic building that recently underwent an extensive renovation. As part of efforts to streamline operations, the FLOWBOX EMOS system was deployed, connecting with the existing measurement and control systems (MaR) and enabling detailed monitoring of electricity, gas, water, and heat consumption.
“Our goal was to gain a more detailed understanding of energy flows—especially the generation and consumption of heating and cooling across the State Opera complex, one of the venues under the National Theatre. The FLOWBOX EMOS system allows us to monitor these metrics both in real time and retrospectively. This enables us to analyze the data and adjust operational settings accordingly,” said Ing. Jan Míka, Deputy Director of Technical and Operational Management at the National Theatre.
“The system also provides comprehensive data necessary for energy reporting,” he added.
Key Benefits of FLOWBOX EMOS
- Advanced analytics and data visualization – The system automatically gathers data and presents it in a user-friendly interface.
- Streamlined workflow for energy managers – Eliminates manual meter readings and reduces administrative workload.
- Cost savings and consumption optimization – Helps identify inefficiencies and anomalies in energy use.
- Automated reporting – Generates clear, structured reports and billing support documents for external heat and cooling clients.
- Increased efficiency in heat and cooling production – Visualization of heat pumps and chillers enables performance analysis and control optimization.
- Carbon footprint tracking – Monitors CO₂ equivalent emissions and offers tools for evaluating the operation’s environmental impact.
Next Steps and Evaluation
The pilot phase of FLOWBOX EMOS at the State Opera will run until August 2025, followed by a comprehensive evaluation of collected data and measured savings. “We are proud to contribute to the modernization of energy management at the State Opera and to demonstrate that advanced technologies can operate effectively even in historic buildings. FLOWBOX EMOS enables detailed consumption analysis and process automation, making energy management easier and saving time for Opera staff,” said Tomáš Rendla, CEO of FLOWBOX.
